California Trademark Pools has put together a video showing the construction phases of building a pool in the Lincoln, California area. The pool was designed with a waterfall cut into the side of the hill. The home owners did a terrific job of coming up with a theme that brings back the old mining days. When the pool and retaining wall were completed, the waterfall looks as if it’s coming out of a mine shaft. Very cool! Check it out!

California Trademark Pools has finished another pool in Rocklin and the home owners couldn’t be more thrilled. This particular pool had many choices to be made, from special engineering to all the different colors necessary to complete the project.

This picture was taken on the first day of excavation. It shows how a lot with a very severe slope off the back of the property can be tamed to become a very beautiful and unique backyard oasis. We actually pushed the pool over the edge of this slope about six feet to maximize the space in this rear yard. Of course, to do this it took some special engineering from Neil Anderson & Associates. One of the biggest challenges of building a pool on a sloped lot is that typically you need to find virgin soil to begin construction. It’s always a good idea to have the engineer come back out after excavation to do a soil inspection and write a letter of approval before you begin.

Raised spa with spillway

This picture shows the tear drop shaped raised spa that was designed by the home owners. This unique shape matched perfectly with there Grecian style pool. We added a split bench, whereas one bench is three inches higher than the other to accommodate shorter people and children. There is also a step on the inside corner to help with getting in and out of the spa. Part of the decorations include tile on the edges of the benches, a twenty-four inch spillway, a colored concrete cap and six inch tile on the exterior and waterline of the spa. We installed six therapy style jets as well.

The finished product turned out fabulous. We raised the bond beam eighteen inches across the entire back of the lot. In the center of the pool we added a forty-eight inch sheer descent that is raised an additional six inches to add another level to the raised wall. The main concrete decks are done with a color and salt finish, and than a twelve inch band is added around the pool with a dark colored stain and a broom finish. There is a flagstone walkway separating the main pool deck and one of the patios coming off of the house. This made a terrific distinction between the two decks. The final touches were two separate Duralum patio covers.

California Trademark Pools gets asked quite often “what are the benefits of adding a hot tub to my pool”. Well, as the owner and president of my company, I usually tell it like it is, so, here it goes. One benefit is that spas can be uniquely shaped, just as your pools can. There is no limit to the different styles, shapes and elevations. Next, if your spa is elevated, you can simply add a spillway that would aid in circulating the water of the spa as well as adding a water feature to the pool. Adding an inground spa will also add value to your property. The free standing spas are much less expensive but also add no home value. Here are a few spas installed by California Trademark Pools:

Tear Drop Raised Spa

This particle spa is raised eighteen inches with tileon the exterior and also on the waterline on the interior. We rounded two of the four corners to give it a tear drop look. The spillway is made of one piece of flagstone to match the tile. The benches on the interior are put in at two different levels to accommodate taller and shorter people. Also, a step is added to allow access into the spa much easier. Tile was also added on the benches for an added attraction. The cap is a standard concrete cantilever with the color San Diego Buff from the Davis color chart.

This spa is seven feet round and raised twenty-four inches as it is cut into a hill side. We raised the decks on each side with a set of steps for easy access to spa. The spillway is approximately four feet wide and done with smooth flagstone to give the waterfall a sheer descent look. The raised decks are finished with a 3 x 6 tile. The walls of the spa are finished with a one inch glass tile that gives it a very unique and classy style. The cap is done with a round bull-nose cantilever made out of concrete. We put the spillway on a schedule to come on for about two hours right at dinner time just so the home owner can enjoy this feature every day.

This is a more traditional square spa and it is raised eighteen inches. Raising a spa will also accommodate for some nice seating for people who want to mingle with the spa crowd without getting wet. The face of the spa is done with a pool friendly stacked stone along with a matching flagstone cap. You have to be careful when selecting stones around a pool because some of them have iron in them and of course, iron and water don’t mix. The spillway is twenty-four inches wide and made with a solid piece of matching flagstone.

California Trademark Pools is nearing completion of another pool in Lincoln. Sean and Kristen purchased there new home a few months ago and have had their hands full with the many changes to their new property. Besides the addition of their new swimming pool, they have also added an unattached garage.

After a minor set back from the City of Lincoln, pool construction got under way on November ninth. After being in business for over twenty-five years, it still amazes me the unforeseen snags that appear. The property is an odd shaped lot, and what the home owner and myself considered the side yard, the City of Lincoln considered the front yard. Swimming pools are required to have setbacks from the street to the pool. Unfortunately, this pool did not meet those requirements. So, not willing to give up, California Trademark Pools redesigned there pool in an appropriate spot that worked out for both parties. I think after construction began, both Sean and Kristen were happy with their decision.

The pool was designed with a large moss rock waterfall cut into the hillside located on the side of the property. We cut back the hill to accommodate a retaining wall that would allow a flat surface for the equipment pad and also some shrub areas. Sean and Kristen would like to carry a theme that would bring back the old gold digger days. To do this, they intend to install a four foot high retaining wall made out of railroad ties and than design a look that would have a broken beam over a cave entrance to give the idea of an old broken down mine shaft. Sean also would like to bring in an old gold cart to add as a lawn ornament in the shrub area. I personally love the idea and think the pool and their waterfall feature will compliment each other very nicely. Its always a pleasure working with people who have a vivid imagination.

It’s a big decision for home owners when they are trying to decide who they want to build their pool. Sometimes, the sales side of the trade has a bit of a reputation of being compared to a ”car salesman”. Here at California Trademark Pools, I totally understand this. I am the owner (President) of my company and will represent only the quality that I put into our pools. I believe Sean and Kristen feel that they have made the right choice and I have enjoyed working with both of them. Its always fun for me, because every pool has a different personality. I haven’t done a gold mine theme yet! I am as anxious as the home owners to see the finished project. Should make for some fantastic pictures and some great topics of conversation for Sean and Kristen’s future pool partys .

Well, its been an awhile since the last post. Things at California Trademark Pool have been busy. The pool is almost complete in Rocklin. The plaster was installed last Saturday and Sunday we fired up the pumps. This particular pool had some interesting twists along the way. The pool was set over the edge of a drop off and required special engineering from Neil Anderson & Associates and also a letter confirming soil conditions.

Delta Gunite required two days to install the retaining walls, pool, and spa. Footings for the retaining wall expanded to twenty-four inches deep and forty-eight inches wide. Along with additional rebar requirements. Whew!!! Don’t think anything will be moving any time soon.

After the gunite process, Eric Johnson Tile’s crew came in and installed the tile for the spa, pool, and raised bond beam, along with the sheer descent. The home owner decided to add step tile, which always makes them more visible.

During the tile process, the home owner decided to add two Duralum patio covers, one cover is a 12′ x 13′ free standing and a second trellis style cover over his cook-top which will be 3′ x 16′. This slowed us down temporarily due to the fact that permits were required. Installation on the covers will begin tomorrow. It’s always an advantage to build with California Trademark Pools due to fact that we not only have our pool license, but also carry a “B” license for any other construction needs.

The pool deck consists of a twelve inch colored band in a broom finish which circles the edge of the pool, while the remaining pool deck is completed with a San Diego Buff color and a salt finish. Once again, the colors of the decks, bands, tile, and caps on the bond beams, came out beautiful. The home owners did a terrific job on all the color selections.

This has been a very fun project for myself and my crew. It’s always a pleasure to work with home owners who appreciate the fact that the guy holding the license is actually still showing up on the job to do some work. This pool will definitely make for some good pool pics for the gallery. If the weather cooperates, we should finish in a week or so.

As a Sacramento area pool contractor, California Trademark Pools has a new pool underway in Rocklin, California. Permits were issued last Thursday and excavating began the following day.

Gayle Totton from Lotus Blue Design was hired to do a full custom landscaping design with a pool and spa on this particular lot. With this major slope off the back of the lot, Gayle did an outstanding job of pushing the pool over the edge to help maximize the usable space in the backyard. Of course, this did create some issues with the engineering. Neil Anderson & Associates were asked to design the free standing pool wall, along with engineering requirements for the retaining walls.

Steve Silvia, from Innovative Excavating was hired to do the excavating. With the special engineering, the pool and spa, leveling both the side yard and the rear yard, there was plenty of dirt to be removed. Access was not an issue on this project and Steve’s crew was able to finish the dig in two days with no complications.

Next step is a soil inspection on Monday with Neil Anderson & Associates. They will have to make an on site visit to verify soil conditions for the freestanding pool wall and the retaining walls. With rain in the forecast, we are hustling to get this project on its way.

This is always an exciting part of the job for me personally. It’s always a challenge getting permits issued in a timely manner and once they are approved to see the home owners enthusiasm and excitement when the equipment shows up to start digging is always rewarding. I am always truly grateful that they chose me and my company to be a part of there project and will do everything I can to make it an enjoyable experience.

California Trademark Pools is a Sacramento area pool contractor that is always ready for another challenge. This time were in Rocklin. Rocklin has some very unique landscape and designing the perfect pool in this type of terrain can sometimes be a mind teaser.

This particular lot is flat coming off the back of the house until you get to the last sixteen feet, which drops off down a hill to about seven feet below grade. The home owner would love to maximize the use of the pool and his entire backyard. So, to do this, we are pushing the pool over the edge of the drop off about four feet. Yikes!

The challenge is to design the back wall of the pool that will be free standing over the edge of the drop off. Neil Anderson and Associates were called upon to engineer this task. To do this, they decided the best alternative was to design a “keyway” down into the enbankment approximately two feet deep and twelve inches wide with number three rebar twelve inches on center. Sound complicated? It certainly can be. Here at California Trademark Pools we are always excited about something different and unique.

The next challenge is to retain the remaining yard on both sides of the pool. Once again Neil Anderson and Associates were called upon. This time there will have to be some supporting footings approximately three feet wide and sixteen inches thick with rebar twelve inches on center to support a six inch wall four feet high. Whew! Definitely meets the requirements to be called a challenge. It is exactly for these reasons why we partner with qualified and experienced professionals.

As soon as permits are approved we will begin this new and exciting project.

When selecting swimming pool patio furniture, style and budget play a large role for many homeowners. However, comfort is the usually the main focus of the effort and it sets the relaxing atmosphere for your guests. In general, when looking for pool patio furniture, you should be looking to supply some lounge chairs. Besides comfort, they should be able to withstand the elements, be made of sturdy materials, and be able to be easily adjustable. Another factor to consider is how easily they can be stored in the off season or if they are stackable. Additionally, any materials you add to them such as cushions should also be made of weather resistant materials. You may also want to consider looking into recycled or green alternative materials if they are available. Check with the manufacturer, before you make your purchase. Here is a list of available popular pool patio furniture materials and retailers:

Teak: A type of hardwood tree found in southern Asia or India is known for its natural oils that allow it to be worked and when it’s found in its best state it’s very weather resistant. One of Teaks biggest disadvantages is that it can split if it becomes too dry from excessive heat. Try Country Casual.

Wicker: There are several types of wicker natural furniture fibers such as cane, rattan, bamboo as well as synthetics and resins. Obviously, synthetics and resin-coated wicker styles are going to be more durable or more weather resistant than natural untreated wicker furniture but proper care against mold and moisture and excessive heat can by achieved by covering your furniture when not in use. Try wickerfurniture.com.

Aluminum or Metal Sling Furniture: This is one of the most common types of pool furniture available and is made from mesh, fabric, or vinyl straps that are suspended or hung from a frame made from metal or aluminum. The idea being this type of construction is fairly sturdy and relatively inexpensive and easy to maintain with a minimum level of care. Sometimes with the vinyl fabrics the coloring can fade. Try patiofurnitureusa.com.

Plastic: Often recycled, plastic is durable and really, almost maintenance free. Plastic furniture is usually light weight, can come in a variety of colors, and can be molded into variety of shapes and can be made to actually look like real materials. One of its disadvantages is however its fragility due to its lightweight, you may need to remove it from the elements, if the weather becomes inclement. Try Outback Patio.

California Trademark Pools has always prided itself as being a quality conscious swimming pool contractor in the Sacramento area. Along with quality we also feel it is important to finish the pool in a timely manner. California Trademark Pools has just completed another pool in less than one month. Excavation was started on June fifteenth by Innovative Excavating, and the pool was filled with water on July tenth. The weather was outstanding and the coordinating of all the different phases could not have gone smoother.

Getting the new pool project done in a timely matter is only part of the process. Debbie’s existing grey broom finished concrete definitely needed some help. We decided to apply a solid stain manufactured by New Look . It took three coats to finally cover up some of the existing stains, but as you can see, the finished product came out fantastic. Working with existing concrete can always be a challenge, trying to match colors, textures and shapes, but this project came together great. After waiting twenty-eight days for our new stamped concrete decks to cure, we applied three coats of Spec West gloss sealer to both surfaces. Adding a gloss sealer to give it the “wet look” is always a nice addition to any surface. Debbie decided she wanted a tropical theme in her backyard. So she used bamboo products to cover the existing air conditioning unit and the new pool equipment. We drilled several holes in the concrete and inserted galvanized metal posts and than tied the bamboo to the new posts. It was a terrific substitute for the typical fences used. We also covered the entire perimeter of the existing wood fence with a slimmer style bamboo. It looks like a resort in Hawaii!

The backyard would not be complete without the final landscaping touches. We installed approximately fifty different types of plants that helped enhance her tropical theme. The plants were purchased at Home Depot and Branches Nursery in Elk Grove. The final touches were to add a commercial grade weed block, install drip systems and spread the black bark. There goal was to create a backyard oasis where every day seems like your visiting a resort. They definitely could take a vacation in there own backyard.

One advantage of building a pool with California Trademark Pools is that we can build your patio cover too. Along with our C53 pool license we also have a B general contractors license. There are many choices of patio covers in todays market ranging from the traditional wood to the maintenance free metal. Covers can be designed with a solid roof or 2×2’s to provide shade. Its important for the home owner to decide what the purpose of the cover is and what type of material will fit there scheme in the back yard.

Traditional wood patio covers give an appearance of a having a heavier look. They’re typically made out of redwood or fur. Berco Redwood offers a variety of quality lumber grades for redwood. The advantage of the wood covers is that it is much more durable than the metal. Bumping into the posts or top usually won’t leave a mark. Unfortunately, there are some maintenance issues with wood. You can leave the redwood unattended and it will turn the natural weathered gray or you can stain it to preserve the redwood color. Fur covers are typically painted to any color you desire. If you use a good premium paint, it will last about five years.

Duralum Patio Cover With 2x2's

Metal covers have a much lighter look to them. Duralum is a quality manufacturer of this type of cover. The biggest advantage is there is no maintenance. The finished product is a nice clean look. No worries of warped boards, or marred lumber. You have an option of six colors to chose from. The covers come with a solid roof design or a variety of open roof designs. The biggest disadvantage is that they are extremely light and will dent if something hits them. Also, when it rains you will be more likely to hear the noise from a metal cover versus a wood cover.

Don’t forget, most patio covers will require a permit. There are many contractors who will tell you that a permit is not required. Why they do this, I don’t know. Permits are designed to help protect you as a home owner. The purpose is to ensure that we the contractor are building you a safe secure structure that follows all the building codes. Most permits are relatively inexpensive. So, do yourself a favor and only work with a contractor that insists you pull a permit for your project. You will be glad you did.

Debbie’s Pool In Final Stages

Talk about excited! Debbie and Jim can’t wait to use their new swimming pool. As a Sacramento area premier quality pool contractor, California Trademark Pools takes great pride in scheduling the pool process in a timely manner. Seems like yesterday we were signing contracts. The dig actually started on June 15th. Everything has gone as scheduled, so it looks like we’ll finish on Thursday or Friday of this week.

Debbie's waterfall almost complete

Last week Eric Johnson Tile put the finishing touches on the waterfall which came out beyond spectacular. We were able to utilize the space in one corner to give Debbie a split waterfall that was created out of moss rock. We notched the bond beam to be able to drop the rock into the water, which gives it a much more natural look. The back bond beam was raised twelve inches to give them a little elevated seating area to over see all the action in their pool or just to lounge around. We added an umbrella sleeve, just to give it that extra touch.

Debbie did an outstanding job of selecting color choices. It was not an easy task because she had to match a used tumbled clay brick that was done on the outside edge of her existing patio. The patio itself is finished with a standard gray broom finish. We thought it would be best to stain that with a color possibly from New Tone. The tile choice was a 6″ x 6″ tile with a dark gray base and a splash of copper which blended really well with the moss rock and the clay brick on the patio.

Debbie's concrete decks

California Trademark Pools installed the concrete decks on July 3. We did a stamp called ”random sandstone” by Proline Concrete Tools. It gave the decks a nice rustic look that again tied together both the moss rock and tile. The color choices for the deck were Spanish Gold from the Davis Colors chart and the release color was Walnut from the Brickformcolor chart. The Spanish Gold color was an excellent choice for the integral color of the decks. It looks more like a copper color than gold, which really blended nicely. The walnut release added a touch of dark brown that matched well with the moss rock on the bond beams. Debbie has decided to seal the concrete to give it the wet look. I love that look! It really enhances the colors of the decks.

After twenty-five years of being in the construction industry, I am still amazed at the number of calls I receive from home owners wondering why there new concrete has cracked. I don’t know if some of the builders themselves don’t know the answer or why they don’t tell the home owner the truth about concrete, but the bottom line is that concrete decks are going to crack.

Concrete is a product that shrinks while its curing. On a ten foot section, it will shrink approximately 1/16th of an inch. This might not seem like much, but from a product that has zero deflection, the slab is going to break. Soil conditions that have not properly been compacted can also cause some cracks. There are many other reasons that can cause cracking, but I’ll save those for another article.

It is always a good a idea to add some type of reinforcement to your concrete. In my opinion, rebar placed 24″ on center is an excellent idea. The rebar will help keep the cracks from expanding and also from seperating. Often after a crack appears, one side of the deck will raise from the other. Rebar will help hold them together to avoid this problem.

Another excellent choice is fiber mesh. It is a product that can be added to the mix prior to installation. The product is inexpensive to add, but has great benefits for the price.

Wire mesh is another alternative. In my opinion, the problem with mesh is that it typically will get trampled to the bottom of the slab during installation. It is very difficult to pull the mesh up during the installation process of screeding. With many hands around during the construction pour, it is impossible not to stand on it while the rod men are doing there job. Typically, the workers should be pulling the mesh up while there working their way across the slab.

Experience is invaluable when it comes to concrete. Here at California Trademark Pools, I tell my clients that their concrete is going to break. I don’t try to scare them, but I do like to inform them about the truth with concrete. I tell them we will do everything in our power to control where those breaks occur, but it is going to break. The proper placement of control joints is a must. These are joints placed in the slab that create a “v” groove, and are approximately 3/4″ deep. There purpose is to create a weak spot in the concrete and try to pursuade the break to occur at that particular spot. Properly placed, these grooves can avoid the nasty hair line cracks that occur in slabs.

Last summer California Trademark Pools built a pool in Roseville that required a little more than the normal pool dig. With adjacent lots elevated and only thirty-two inches of clearance down each side yard, the only alternative was to boom the equipment over the wall at the rear of the lot.

Traffic Control

The first step is to get approval from the City of Roseville. Typically, the city will require a bond along with other city permit fees. Next is to get approval from traffic control. A drawing showing proper signs and cone placement is required. The city will also require the day of the boom and the approximate time. A call is needed to the city to have an inspector come out and approve the proper signage and cone placement prior to the boom. Sounds like a lot of work? Here at California Trademark Pools we love the challenges.

Flying skid steer

Once the boom starts it is incredibly cool! It’s just not every day you see a skid steer forty feet in the air flying over a wall. We also boomed over an excavator. It makes for some great pictures. The entire process took approximately two and half hours. Of course set up and tear down was the bulk of the work.

Once the equipment was set up in the back yard, it was time to move to the front. We placed approximated 80′ of a conveyor type system to get the dirt from the back yard to the front yard. Steve Sylva, from Innovative Excavating supplied the conveyor system. It worked outstanding. Between California Trademark Pools and Innovative Excavating, we made a fairly impossible dig seem very easy. The dig took 1 1/2 days and than it was time to setup all over again to remove the equipment. It was truly a unique situation and the home owners couldn’t have been happier.

When I first met Debbie and proposed my plans for her pool, I could hear some concerns in her voice about whether or not I was the right choice to be her pool builder. I reassured her that “bigger” does not always mean “better”. I reminded her that as the Owner of California Trademark Pools, I have to wear many hats and I am more than happy to do so. You see, as a small pool builder I represent the salesman, the project manager and the customer service representative. As a customer, you only need to know one name, and thats Jerry. To me, this is a huge advantage, as I will do everything in my power to make sure the customer is happy.

At the beginning of the pool dig the skid steer developed a leak in the hydraulic hose , but now the pool is rolling along. Gunite was shot in on Thursday of last week, and today the tile was installed. I subcontract the excavating to Steve Sylva owner of Innovative Excavating, Inc. and contract with Eric Johnson Tile all tile and rock work. I’m always amazed when a future client is concerned that I subcontract work out instead of having it in house. These people are business owners too, and also take pride in their work.

Finding the Right Pool Cover

Pool covers come in all sorts of designs, varieties, shapes and general types. However, your first thought in choosing the right cover for your pool should be to decide what the primary purpose is that you want the pool cover to achieve. Do I want a cover that will keep my children safe? Am I concerned about animals drowning? Does it need to help maintain the heat in the pool, or am I just looking for something to keep the debris out?

Many pool covers are designed to accommodate architectural features such as any water feature, spa, or fountain. They come in vinyl, mesh, or plastic, depending how durable you need the protection to be. They also come in a variety of colors. When you want to use the pool, you can remove the cover manually, or if your pool will allow it, you can invest in an automatic cover that will retract the cover with a waterproof motor mounted under the deck or on the edge of the pool.

Solar type covers are designed to maintain the heat in your pool. They are generally used in warmer climates where there’s plenty of sun. They are designed with a “bubble” system that collects the solar energy from the sun during the day which not only holds in the heat but aids in heating as well. However, these types of covers are not very secure because of there design.

Safety is a main issue for pool covers. Many security covers are able to hold several adults at one time without damaging the material. With this type of cover comes the ease of mind knowing that you’ve done everything possible to protect your children and pets. These solid covers will aid in the keeping debris from your pool. Not many people enjoy raking leaves in there lawn let alone there pool. Keeping the cover on when not in use will also help in maintaining loss of water from evaporation which will save on chemical use.

I would suggest using a cover that meets your needs, as there is a definite price difference for each cover. Bubble wraps are simple and easy, while motorized retractable solid covers are top of the line. Be sure to check with your pool builder or the building department regarding any codes that may need to be addressed. And lastly, it’s always a good idea to choose a cover that has a solid warranty. These products must be able to withstand the sun, water, and all the weather in between.

Which Pool Cleaner is Right For Me?

Adding a swimming pool to your backyard can be a beautiful asset. Unfortunately, every asset requires a certain amount of maintenance. Cleaning your pool is not one of the more enjoyable moments of owning a pool. So, you have a few choices with cleaning your pool. Contract it out, do it manually, or use an automatic pool cleaner. Some people will hire it out. A few people that have the time will clean it themselves. But the majority of people will opt for the automatic cleaner.

Most people don’t realize that there are two different types of cleaners. There is a pressure side or a suction side. I’ll explain both types of cleaners and then you can decide which one works best for your pool.

First the pressure side pool cleaner works off of pressure from the pool pump or a separate booster pump designated for the cleaner. The pressure from the pump propels the cleaner around the pool forcing the debris into a mesh bag or skimmer net. The biggest benefit of the pressure side cleaner is that the debris is not sucked back to the pump basket or filter. All the debris is held at the unit. Therefore if you have a yard that has a lot of leaves or other debris in the fall than this would be a good choice. The bad thing with pressure side cleaners is that it will not pick up the really fine dirt as it will leak through the mesh bag, and it has a hard time climbing walls and stairs. There will be a little maintenance required to empty the cleaner’s bag or net as it becomes filled.

The suction side cleaner works like a vacuum cleaner. It requires the suction side of the pump to pull the debris off the bottom of the pool and propel it along. Suction side cleaners act more like a moving drain. They move at a much slower pace than the pressure side cleaners but are able to pick up the really fine particles from the pool. If you have a pool which does not collect a lot of leaves and larger debris, than this cleaner would be a good choice. The bad thing with a suction side cleaner is that it also has a hard time climbing walls and stairs, and everything pulled from the pool through the cleaner ends up in the basket at the pump or the pool filter which will require the need to take the time to clean it more often.

Both cleaners have some pros and cons. There are also many manufacturers for each cleaner. I suggest buying from a reputable company and one with a good solid warranty.

Most Common Pool Chemicals

Here is a list of some common chemicals used in swimming pools today:

Chlorine: This is the most commonly used pool chemical in the industry. It will kill algae, bacteria, living organisms, ammonia, and many other contaminates that are in pool water. Chlorine comes in both a granular and a tablet form. The tablet sizes are 1″ and 3″. Many of today’s pools use a salt chlorine generator which produces a more pure chlorine than what you can purchase off the shelf. It will also pay for itself over a period of time as a result of not having to purchase as much chlorine.

Muriatic Acid: This chemical is used to lower the ph and alkalinity levels in pools. Muriatic acid comes in a liquid form. Caution should be used when using this product. You should not pour Muriatic acid over any shallow areas such as a cabo shelf or swim out as it can etch the surfaces. You should read the label to determine how much to add, and also, the proper way to add it. You can also use Sodium Bisulfate to lower the ph. This product is sold in a granular form and is often referred to as “dry acid”. Sodium Bisulfate will also help reduce levels of alkalinity.

Alkalinity Increaser: The scientific name is Sodium Bicarbonate which comes in a granular form and is used to raise the alkalinity level in the pool water. You should also read the label for this chemical to determine how much to add.

Shock: As a pool owner, you will become familiar with the shock treatments. With chlorine it is necessary to periodically shock your pool water. Shock is in a granular form. Calcium Hypochlorite and Lithium Hypochlorite are two chlorine based shock. How often you shock your pool has been widely debated. Some say once a week, some say once every two weeks, and some say once a month. I would suggest reading the labels to help determine how often you should shock your pool.

Wow, I can think of at least a hundred different reasons to own a swimming pool. As a Sacramento pool contractor, living with the dry heat in the heart of sunny California is a pretty good reason all by itself. But let’s start with just the common family fun. It’s like being on a permanent vacation everyday. Coming home with the option of just kicking back and relaxing by the pool with your family always amazes me. And if you can’t kick it today, there’s always tomorrow, or the next, or the next. The kids think they come home to paradise every day after school. I don’t know too many of there friends who come over and don’t have a good time.

Families with young children get to teach them early how to swim. Kids love the water and what better way to get them off your couch and into a healthy environment than swimming. At the end of there first swim season you’ll be amazed at how they’ve become like little fish. Some of my wife and my fondest memories are the early years when they just started swimming. I swear they were growing fins. If there’s ever a good reason to purchase a pool, its children.

As a parent, we learned that the pool is not only for the children. What a perfect way to unwind after a long day. Whether you need to relax and take a float around the pool, or just grab a lounge chair and enjoy your favorite book. It’s always nice to be able to take a quick dip, cool off, and read a few more chapters. What a great way to get a free tan. Adding a water feature with the sound of rushing water also can be very soothing and therapeutic. And don’t forget about that warm jetted hot tub. Spas are a great way to end the perfect romantic evening.

Gunite Pools Have Many Advantages

There are many types of swimming pools available today. Gunite and shotcrete are popular because they are built permanently in the ground. They are reinforced with steel bars that typically require engineering. The biggest difference between gunite and shotcrete pools is that gunite is a sprayed on dry mix that is blown through a hose with water added, whereas shotcrete is sprayed on as a wet application. Gunite is a very long lasting product that stands up well to most chemicals, is extremely strong, and able to withstand most weather conditions.

Gunite is a dry mixture of 1 part cement and 4 parts sand. The material is mixed and compressed while it is dry. This dry mixture is blown through a hose under high pressure. Water is than added to the mixture as it goes through the hose and out the nozzle at the end which makes the material extremely sticky. With the right amount of water and control of the mix, this material can be placed with any thickness and still maintain its uniform quality. Gunite has a rating of 6000 – 7000 psi which makes it extremely strong. This rating is higher than most concretes and bricks. It also has a high bonding rate allowing it to adhere to concrete, brick, rock, tile, stone, rebar and mesh.

Gunite pools are a very popular choice for residences because of the endless design options. The sizes and shapes are limited only to the designer. It is very easy to adapt a natural looking waterfall feature or grotto. The bond beam can be notched to allow moss rock or other types of rock to appear as if they are built into the pool naturally. Raised bond beams can easily accommodate different types of sheer descents or water sculptures. Curves and edges have no boundaries. Raising a spa can also add a spillway representing another water feature. The infinite edge adds another dimension to the look of your more exquisite gunite pools. Swimming pools that are designed with gunite and proper landscaping can add years of enjoyment for you and your family.

Different regions of the country are partial to different types of filters. There are basically three different types of pool filters offered today. They are Sand, Diatomaceous Earth, and Cartridge. Depending on the number of gallons of water in the pool will determine which size filter is needed.

Sand filters use specially graded silica sand for its filter purposes. It generally will trap particles in the 20 – 100 micron range. The water enters into the tank through the diffusers and goes down into the sand where the dirt and debris become trapped in the sand. After the water reaches the bottom of the tank it enters into the laterals and is than returned to the pool. This particular filter has to be backwashed to clean. If your pool is sized correctly it should last some where around 4 weeks between backwashes.

Diatomaceous Earth, or DE filters as they are commonly called, is the most efficient way to filter water. It has plastic grids that are covered with a plastic type of fabric where a powder called Diatomaceous Earth is layered over the top of the grids. Because the DE powder is much finer than the silica sand in sand filters, it is able to trap particles in the 5 – 8 micron range. This type of filter, like the sand filter, also needs to be backwashed to clean and should last around 4 weeks between backwashes. You will also have to add the appropriate amount of DE powder back on the grids after each cleaning.

The filter of choices among most pool owners today are the Cartridge filters because of there simplicity. They use a paper type filter that is similar to that of an automobile. It will trap particles from 25 – 100 micron size. The cartridges should be replaced every 2 – 5 years depending on how much work it is asked to do. If the filter is undersized, of course it will not last as long. Typically, the right sized filter will go 6 months without cleaning. There is no backwashing with a cartridge filter. Simply remove the cartridge from the tank and hose it thoroughly from top to bottom and than replace it.

These reasons range from family entertainment, to being able to enjoy various water features and from the luxury of a spa, to the mere purpose of enjoying a little physical exercise. Regardless of why a swimming pool is built, each individual who has a swimming pool today should hold safety as a top priority.

Unfortunately pool safety is often ignored. Many home owners with pools are under a false opinion that most inadvertent drowning deaths happen when the family is outdoors using the pool or entertaining guests. Nevertheless, many accidents come about when young children leave the safety of the home without a parent or guardian knowing it. Children are attracted to water without understanding the dangers that are involved. At the other end of the age spectrum, without the proper safety equipment installed, the elderly could slip and fall or have trouble getting out of the pool.

Gates should be self-closing swinging away from the pool and latches should be out of a child’s reach. Check with your local building codes for proper requirements.

Besides the fact that you are saving money on your utility bill, the multi speed pump has many other options. I have had several of my customers call me after the pump has been installed to verify that the pump is even running. This sounds hard to believe but the Starite Intellipro 4×160 variable speed pump is so quiet that you hardly notice it! Some other facts are you no longer need that booster pump for your pool cleaner. Set one speed for the filter and another speed for the cleaner. It’s that simple. Now you still have two more speeds to maybe add solar and or a water feature! In my opinion, these facts make the variable speed pumps a much wiser choice that than the two speed pumps.

Today’s swimmer, or should I say, tonight’s swimmer, has plenty of options when it comes to lighting his or her swimming pool, and not just the swimming pool deck. Long gone are the days of just a single spot light secured to a wall on the house beaming an unpleasant and sometimes dangerous glare on the surface of the water. Today, even older pools can be retro fitted with new safe and attractive fiber optic lighting technology that can add drama and extend the swimming and entertaining hours of your pool.

Underwater lighting is not mandatory in every pool, but if you want to enjoy your pool and have it be safe at night, typically a single incandescent light will be added to the swimming pool approximately 18 inches to 4 feet below the surface and directed away from the house. Electricity runs from the control panel to the bulb. The owner may select to use wet-niche lights. In this set-up, the watertight lighting fixture actually contacts the water and is cooled by it. As alternatives to incandescent lights, fluorescent and quartz-halogen lights may be used and typically use less electricity which will save money in the long run. However the new wave in cost effective and energy efficient lighting is LED technology. LED lighting uses a solid object or diode as a source of illumination, rather than a gas or filament as in the older traditional lighting methods. As a result it has a longer lifespan as it is more resistant to energy dissipation and it also generates less heat. LED lighting also offers a broader spectrum of colors than traditional lighting as the individual diodes can be mixed and maxed for dazzling effects.

The biggest recent development in pool ambient lighting is fiber-optic lighting. The hardware used to install this type of lighting looks similar to traditional electrical lighting but instead of electrical current being carried to a fixture, the cord that runs to the pool is made up of fibers that carry light, not electricity. A lens at the end of the cord releases the illumination into the pool. What’s equally amazing about this, is that while there is no electric current passing there is no heat as well. Because the apparatus to house the fibers can be housed outside and remote from the pool area, the whole color spectrum of the color wheel is now available to pool owners. With this in mind, lighting has taken on new meaning in the pool area. Colors abound and can be mixed, set to music, installed in waterfalls, waterjets, along walkways, inside pool steps and can create patterns and shapes in your pool. Your imagination is really the limit!

SALT WATER SWIMMING POOLS

Are you in the process of trying to decide whether to do a salt-water swimming pool or not? Unlike traditional chlorine swimming pools, there are many benefits for you and your family. Here are just a few of the best reasons to consider a salt-water pool:

Over time the salt chlorine generator will pay for itself with the savings of not having to chlorinate as often. The initial expense of salt in the pool and cost of the salt chlorine generator should be recovered in less than 2 years, depending on the size of the swimming pool. This alone makes the salt-water pool worth exploring.

Unlike the traditional swimming pool, where chlorine must be stored, handled, and added by the homeowner, the salt in the pool, via the chlorine generator will make the chlorine allowing it to be safer for pool owners who balance there own chemicals. This is a big advantage for pool owners. The salt chlorine generator also creates purer chlorine making it easier to deal with dry skin, green hair, and bleached out swimsuits.

Once you learn the system, it will become easier to manage your pools chemicals. The water in your pool runs through the generator where it is electrified creating chlorine. It also alerts you on the salt levels in your pool. Typically it will help control algae and the levels of the other chemicals in the pool as well.

Many of our California Trademark Pools customers have salt water pools and are very satisfied. If you would like a list of references please contact our office 916-683-1202. Although chlorine levels and other chemical levels still have to be maintained, it is usually safer and healthier than the traditional chlorine pool. This along with the fact that it will pay for itself makes it a very inviting investment. You can find out more on this product at http://www.pentairpool.com/products/products3.php?id=75

The best way to extend the use of your swimming pool season, save money, and be “green” all at the same time is to heat your swimming pool using solar heat in combination with a solar pool cover at night. We probably all know why heating a pool is costly to begin with; it’s based on the fact that during the night and on cloudy days when temperatures are low, the pool loses so much heat because its large broad surface is exposed to the elements. As a result, conventional heating methods just can’t keep up to this continual heat loss. For a couple of reasons, solar heat and swimming pools are a great combination. This solar heating pool-combo works, it’s a natural because pools don’t require large amounts of high-intensity heat and they act as their own heat-transfer liquid and heat-storage units, plus heating the pool requires only a few pieces of equipment. Lastly, the swimming season corresponds to the months of high hot sun and long days, allowing for collection of plenty of solar heat.

In brief, solar panels are installed, usually on the roof of your home, and then in most cases using your existing pool pump, water from the pool is then pumped through the panels which are then heated by the sun that has been transferred into the solar panels. The water continues to circulate through the panels until the desired temperature is achieved. Using a solar blanket or cover at night helps extend the effects and helps prevent heat loss by evaporation and radiation. If you want to discuss using Solar for your heating solution for your swimming pool installation, call our office.

I am often asked about the activity area or work area needed around a pool by my customers. Of course, this is somewhat determined by the configuration of the lot and the footprint of the structures already present. However, what I give as a guideline to my customers is that in general it would be ideal to allow for a minimum 4 foot-wide deck area or at least an area equal to the area of the pool. This way you allow access to the pool, keep garden areas from becoming water-logged, allow for access to cleaning the pool unhampered, and help keep dirt and other debris out of the pool as well. So any range of say 4 – 8 feet can provide a very nice pool deck for any purpose.

REFERRAL

“In Fall 2009 my wife and I decided to complete our backyard which included a pool, our first ever! We knew it was going to be a challenging project as we lived on a hill and had a shallow, sloping yard that we wanted to reengineer in order to maximize our pool size and extend our usable space.

We researched and talked to quite a few pool contractors; ultimately we selected Jerry Johnson of California Trademark Pools for one key reason; after meeting with him several times and talking through our project, we trusted him to do a great job on our project for a reasonable price.

Our project is now complete and we’re really pleased with how it turned out. I’d strongly recommend Jerry for a number of reasons.

First, Jerry took “hands-on” personal ownership for our project. He was here nearly every day working on the project and ensuring it was done the way he wanted. He’s got tremendous expertise and that gave us a lot of confidence as the project moved along.

Second, Jerry is really easy to work with. We changed our minds several times on design issues as we moved along and Jerry gracefully accommodated all our requests. In one case, he even lowered (an already built!) overhead gazebo that I felt was too high. No big deal. We ended up getting the back yard we wanted and he was flexible enough to help us figure it out along the way.

Third, Jerry really looked out for us throughout the project. He tactfully suggested alternatives if we were thinking about something that wasn’t going to quite look right or make sense, he helped us figure out ways to manage our costs, he honored his original pricing quote even when some extra engineering and structural expenses were necessary. In a nutshell, he was a real partner with us.

Jerry and his team did a great job for us and we’re really happy with our new back yard and pool.”

REFERRAL

“I spoke with many different contractors and received many estimates. I went with Jerry because he was very easy to work with and was very fair and honest. I initially hired him just for my pool, but after working with him, we ended up landscaping my entire 1 acre yard. I honestly felt like I was working with a friend, rather than just a contractor. My backyard came out just fabulous and I couldn’t be more pleased. Feel free to come and look at the wonderful job Jerry and his crew did for me.”

Jim Cutajar

REFERRAL

“We had our pool built by Jerry Johnson earlier this year in 2007. We are thrilled with how it turned out. Jerry was very easy to work with, very professional, and offered excellent advice and guidance at every step of construction.

He was very accommodating when we requested modifications to his original design but did not hesitate to point out any problems when we asked for something that he knew might not work or might not look right.
We are very satisfied with the results.

We choose Jerry because he is a small, local company and did not use salespeople. When you talk to Jerry, you talk to the boss. His workers were efficient and thorough. They were also respectful of our property and privacy during construction.

We would not hesitate to recommend Jerry to friends and family to build a swimming pool. He would be the first we would have bid on any other type of construction that we may need in the future.”

REFERRAL

“We were very pleased with our experience with Jerry and California TRADEMARK Pools for the design and build of our in-ground swimming pool and spa. From the onset, Jerry was responsive and professional, and willing to go the extra mile to meet our needs. His crew is knowledgeable, hard-working, courteous and professional. We are very pleased with the service we were provided, and the final product we received. We’d recommend California TRADEMARK Pools and Jerry Johnson Construction, Inc. without hesitation for any swimming pool project, or other home improvement project.”

REFFERAL

“Bob and I want to thank you for your outstanding work on our pool and patio. Starting with a bare 2.5 acre yard, it’s a challenge to plan and execute a pool and patio of this scale, and we are very pleased with the outcome of ours.

From the very beginning of construction, the plans were carried out as outlined by your design, in a timely manner and with the finest of workmanship. The cost of our project was most reasonable compared to the other bidders on our job. We are thrilled with the results and can’t thank you enough.

We invite you to bring any future potential customers to see our pool and patio as an example of your quality of workmanship.”

“An unique feature of our business is that your designer is also your builder! So because there is no “salesman” between you and your pool builder, your design makes it to the construction site unimpeded by any potential for communication barriers.”

California TRADEMARK Pools

Ready to make an appointment for your “Free” estimate? Contact us Today!

Once you approve your design plan for your dream pool, the permit process begins.

PERMIT PROCESS:

California TradeMark Pools submits your swimming pool blueprint to the appropriate building department for approval to construct your new swimming pool. The permit issued and a copy of your plans will be placed in a plastic pouch which will be posted near your pool construction area, where it should remain through the duration of your project.

UNDERGROUND SERVICE ALERT:

Prior to the excavation of your pool, California TradeMark Pools will call Underground Service Alert, who in turn, contacts all service companies in your area. Each service company will contact California TradeMark Pools either clearing the area or placing flags in your yard where service lines are located.

LAYOUT:

A California TradeMark Pools contractor and an excavation crew will layout the shape of your pool as designed and then as approved during the permit process. This is a joint effort to ensure the contractor and the pool excavator agree to the placement of your pool in your yard and the digging requirements per the design.

Layout

EXCAVATION:

Once the layout is complete, we will require approximately one to two hours of your time to review your excavation check list and secure your signature for approval of the excavation plan and your blueprint. Upon your approval, we will begin excavation and hand contouring your pool. Excavation generally takes a complete work day.

Excavation

PLUMBING & ELECTRICAL:

Pool piping, valves, electrical bonding, and electrical run for the filter pump, additional feature pumps, and any underwater lighting required will be installed after rebar is installed. Now your pool is ready for the first inspection checkpoint by the building department, prior to the shooting of any gunite into your pool construction site.

The purpose of a pre-gunite inspection is to check the placement of steel rebar and bonding of the light niches, as well as, the inspection of the plumbing. California Trademark Pools will handle the scheduling of this and all other inspections required to complete your pool. Once the building department approves the pre-gunite inspection, your pool construction project is now ready to have gunite scheduled.

REINFORCEMENT INSTALLATION (REBAR):

The steel bars or “rebar” are the reinforcing bars that provide the main support structure of your pool. You may expect the installing of rebar to be completed within a few work days after excavation, as a standard.

Reinforcement Installation

GUNITE APPLICATION:

On the day your pool is to be “shot” with gunite, several gunite trucks and crew will arrive at your pool construction site. Gunite, a sand and cement mixture, is shot through hoses onto the steel structure of your pool. You will soon begin to see the true shape of your swimming pool, as the gunite pool will shape the bottom, sides, any grottos or other special areas, and steps of your pool.

During the summer months when temperatures are high, it will be necessary to continue to dampen your pool once a day until California TradeMark Pools schedules your pool to be plastered.

Gunite Application

TILE/WATERSCAPE:

TILE, BRICK, & ROCK:The tile for your pool is placed on the perimeter of the pool. The brick and/or rock, if any, are placed on the bond beam.

COPING/DECKING:COPING:Our crew will now install your coping selection around your pool which is cantilevered over the edge of your pool. Typical applications for coping can include cement, brick, or stone.

DECK FORMS:Our deck crew will now arrive to grade the area around your pool and begin placing forms for the shape of your pool decking. Once forms have been set by our crew, but prior to the pour of your pool deck, you will need to water down these areas so that the concrete will cure properly.

PRE-DECK INSPECTION:This particular inspection point is not required in some areas, cities, and counties, but if required for your pool, the inspector will be checking the bonding any diving board/slides, the grading of the deck area, and the depth of the trenches.

DECK POUR:The deck crew and cement truck(s) will arrive with decking materials to pour and finish your pool deck. At this point, you will need to supply your gates with self closing and self latching devices. If you are uncertain about what devices are required for your remaining inspections, please contact our office at 683-1202 for information. Fencing and gates must be completed prior to pre-plaster and/or final inspection

Tile and Concrete Decking

EQUIPMENT DELIVERY & INSTALLATION:

At this point in the construction of your new pool, the circulating pump, filter, and any other swimming pool, equipment and supplies will be delivered to your home. The plumbing crew will be scheduled to arrive shortly after receiving your equipment and will install your equipment on the cement pad provided during deck pour.

Pool Equipment Set

PLASTER INSTALLATION:

PRE-PLASTER INSPECTION: During this inspection the building department is checking to see that all fences are enclosing your pool and that all gates or door openings are equipped with self closing and self latching devices designed to keep gates and doors securely closed at all times. They may also be inspecting to see that all pool lights and/or equipment is installed per your plan. These requirements vary from county to county.

PLASTER PREPARATION AND CLEANUP: The plaster crew will arrive prior to plaster to prepare the pool shell for plaster, and to remove construction debris from your yard. This process routinely takes one day to complete. It would be important to keep in mind that placing your new pool in your yard may change the grade, elevation, and contour of your yard which may affect drainage.

PLASTER: Your pool has now reached the final phase of construction. The plaster truck and crew will arrive and set up hoses to pump the plaster into your swimming pool. They will usually access the back yard through a side gate, from the street, with hoses extending to the swimming pool. After application of the plaster, the crew will hand trowel the plaster. When the trowel work is completed, the crew will place your water hose inside the pool to begin filling our pool from the deep end. You can estimate that it will take approximately 24 hours for your pool to fill. Once your pool is full, it is important to brush all surfaces with the long pole and brush which is provided in your equipment package delivered earlier.

Pool Plastering

FINAL WALK THROUGH:

A punch list of any concerns you may have will be compiled at start-up when California Trademark Pools and you will “walk through” your new pool. This punch list process will be handled generally within one week after plaster is completed.

START-UP:

California Trademark Pools will apply your pools first chemicals to balance and “start” your pool for safe and healthy swimming for you and your family or friends.

Jerry Johnson, Owner
California TRADEMARK Pools

BEFORE YOU START TO BUILD:

Your home is generally the largest financial investment you may make in a lifetime. Adding a pool to your property, while it contributes to your enjoyment, does represent a relatively significant monetary outlay for most people. As a result, we encourage you to be diligent in your research as you find the perfect contractor and pool company to design and build your dream pool.

GENERAL INFORMATION YOU SHOULD KNOW:

In California, any contracting job–including swimming pool construction or repair–that costs $500 or more must be performed by a contractor who holds a current, valid contractors license from the California Contractors License Board (CSLB). The license must be in the specialty for the work to be performed. There are 44 different kinds of contractor licenses, most of which are for specialty work, such as swimming pool construction.

In general, to become licensed, contractors must pass a written examination that tests knowledge of their trade; verify four years of journey-level experience in their trade; post a license bond; and show proof of workers’ compensation insurance, if needed.

Contractors who perform swimming pool construction or repairs must be licensed as swimming pool specialty contractors. A general building contractor may also contract for swimming pool work provided the general building contractor holds the swimming pool specialty classification, or the general building contractor hires a licensed swimming pool specialty contractor to perform the work.

It is important to find out who you’re dealing with–the contractor or the contractor’s salesperson. Anyone who solicits, sells, negotiates, or executes home improvement contracts, including swimming pool contracts, for a licensed contractor away from the contractor’s normal place of business (such as in your home), must be registered with the CSLB. Home improvement salespersons must be ready to present to you their HIS registration.

Check the menu for suggested research criteria and other helpful tips.

One of the first steps in investigating a contractor is to check out the pool company’s license with the California Contractors State License Board. Ask the contractor for their license number and if applicable, the salesman, HIS registration.

What Does The Contractors State License Board (CLSB) Do?
The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) protects consumers by regulating the construction industry through policies that promote the health, safety and general welfare of the public in matters relating to construction. The CSLB licenses and regulates contractors in 44 license classifications, registers home improvement salespersons, investigates complaints against contractors, provides education for informed consumer decisions and through SWIFT (Statewide Investigative Fraud Team), works to eliminate the number of unlicensed contractors working in California.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR:

Does the contractor or company carry at least a C-53 license?

Have any complaints/legal actions been filed against their license and if so, how were they resolved?

Is the company bonded?

Does the company carry workman’s compensation insurance?

Does the company carry liability insurance?

To check a license number, Click HERE or go to www.cslb.ca.gov

CHECK REFERENCES:

Ask the contractor for the names of clients–one current and one completed–and talk to them about the job and their satisfaction with the contractor. Some questions to ask include:

Were you satisfied with the contractor’s work?

Did the contractor keep to the project schedule?

Did the contractor stick to the contract terms and costs?

How did the contractor deal with changes and corrections?

Did the contractor resolve problems?

PREPARE A CHECKLIST:

We have supplied a sample check list for you on the next menu selection item to use when comparing contractors and companies. Below are some tips to keep in mind once you select your pool builder and you start the building process,

Hire only licensed contractors.

Check contractor’s license number at www.cslb.ca.gov or (800) 321-CSLB.

Get three references and review past work.

Get at least three bids.

Get a written contract and don’t sign anything until you completely understand the terms.

Pay 10% or $1,000 down, whichever is less, for swimming pool projects. At CA TradeMark Pools, we require ZERO down to start your pool!

Don’t let payments get ahead of the work.

Don’t make final payment until completion of the final plastering phase of construction, and until the installation or construction of equipment, decking, or fencing required by the contract has also been completed.

Don’t pay cash.

Keep a job file of all papers relating to your project.
