Swimming Pool Landscape Design

Posted under Pool Landscaping by admin

When working with my customers to design their landscape plan for their backyard swimming pool environment, I keep some pretty basic landscaping principles in mind as I develop their plans.  As a result, everything I put into a design will tie back to one of these main principles.

1.        Comfort:  Room must be made for the right design elements to account for the sun movements during the day, wind changes, and room for lounging, so that while you are swimming, soaking, sunning, or entertaining, you will be happy in the appropriate setting that has been adjusted for just that right climatic condition.

2.       Beauty:  While that perfect swim is very important, the total environmental balance of blending the landscape components with the hardscape items, like the spa, sidewalks, and of course the pool, to achieve a harmonious balance throughout the entire backyard area is equally important.

3.       Privacy:  It is often a priority to include trees, screens, hedges, fencing, and walls, to fully or partially block views of the pool from outside the yard or to reduce noise for my customers further enjoyment of their yard.

4.       Safety:  Always paramount in any pool / backyard landscaping plan for your family and neighbors too.  This is by law as well.  This can include self latching gates, locks, alarm systems, pool covers, non-slippery and unobstructed pathways, and well-lit areas at night.

5.       Convenience and Flexibility:  It’s important to create areas that provide flow that logically moves traffic into and out of your home while still creating areas that provide for pool related activities, i.e., entertaining, barbequing, dining, etc.  Obviously the more convenient and flexible these are, the more you will enjoy your backyard and pool area.  Also, if items can be made to serve dual purposes this can also provide added flexibility.  So if for instance, a decorative seating bench can serve as storage for pool equipment or pool toys, this is an added benefit for the customer.

6.       Ease of maintenance:  This principle should almost go without saying but plants that shed a minimum of leaves or are drought proof and materials that are water resistant, fade proof, or rust-resistant can make taking care of the backyard more enjoyable for a homeowner and I always try to promote this with my customers.

Of course, with any landscaping design process, beauty is always in the eye of the beholder! However, you will always receive my best assessment of what I believe is the best alternative based on my experience and professional expertise. We will work together to find the best fit for your lot, needs, and pocketbook.
